Let us remember: One book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the world.

April showers may bring May flowers, but budding readers are blossoming thanks to the great teachers who sow the seeds of literacy. And May is the time to celebrate both!

The second Tuesday of May is National Teacher Appreciation Day, part of Teacher Appreciation Week, which occurs the second week of May. It’s also Get Caught Reading month. Like peanut butter and jelly, and baseball and hot dogs, these things just go perfectly together.

“Teachers are our greatest leaders,” Rourke editor in chief Keli Sipperley said. “Their influence is invaluable, and their daily contributions manifest in full as students grow to become attentive, empathetic, critical thinkers engaged in making the world a better place.”

Encouraging a love of books is part and parcel for an educator, and that, according to research, goes a long way in making their students both smarter and kinder.

Multiple studies have concluded that people who read fiction often seem better prepared to understand other people, empathize with their experiences, and consider the world from their perspective, while reading nonfiction helps them develop the background knowledge to decipher increasingly complex information. In short, when teachers promote reading fiction and nonfiction, it’s a win-win for the world!

Rourke Educational Media has published eye-catching, engaging children’s books supporting national curriculum standards since 1980. Our commitment to creating high-quality nonfiction and fiction materials that provide teachers with books students love to read is unwavering.

This month, thank a teacher (or many teachers!) and don’t forget to Get Caught Reading!
